Sustainable Filtering Systems to Reduce Microfiber Emissions from Textiles during Household Laundering

چکیده
During laundering, synthetic textiles (polyester, polyamide, etc.) can release small fiber debris with a length of <5 mm. These are type microplastics (MPs), usually referred to as microfibers (MFs), which considered high-concern pollutants due their continuous and cumulative entrance into the environment. Currently, far we know, there no feasible alternatives remove them. In this work, four new sustainable filtering systems proposed retain MFs emitted from domestic washing machines. The filters contain replaceable cartridge partially filled recycled low-density polyethylene pellets. designed different sizes were tested in household machine determining retention efficiency after several cycles. It was found that all assessed filter arrangements have good performance for retaining washers’ effluents. Filter F1 (diameter 4 cm height 30 cm) started more than 50% MFs, at 10th cycle, climbed 66%, while 20th its greater 80%. MF higher F2 6.3 41 cm), achieving 90% cycle. F3 arranged by turning model flow upside down is compared values, reaching almost 100% 15th Finally, F4 arrangement developed using existing filter, obtaining better filters, efficiencies summary, depending on arrangement, microfiber estimated between 52% 86% 1st cycle up 83% 99% 20th. Additionally, demonstrated cartridges may last cycles before needing be replaced.

Emissions of microplastic fibers from microfiber fleece during domestic washing
Microplastics are found in marine and freshwater environments; however, their specific sources are not yet well understood. Understanding sources will be of key importance in efforts to reduce emissions into the environment. We examined the emissions of microfibers from domestic washing of a new microfiber polyester fleece textile. Analyzing released fibers collected with a 200 μm filter during...
متن کاملIndoor Emissions from Household Combustion of Coal
Coal is a highly variable fuel, which ranges from high heating-value anthracite through various forms of bituminous coal to intermediates in coal formation, viz. lignite and peat. Each of these types of fuel can contain different levels of moisture, non-combustible inorganic material (ash), sulfur, and sometimes significant levels of other impurities, e.g. arsenic, fluorine, lead and mercury. متن کاملHousehold actions can provide a behavioral wedge to rapidly reduce US carbon emissions.
Most climate change policy attention has been addressed to long-term options, such as inducing new, low-carbon energy technologies and creating cap-and-trade regimes for emissions. We use a behavioral approach to examine the reasonably achievable potential for near-term reductions by altered adoption and use of available technologies in US homes and nonbusiness travel. We estimate the plasticit...
